CD Sheet Music(TM) is the revolutionary series of masterworks on CD- or DVD-ROM that transforms a PC or MAC computer into a virtual music library. Now you can quickly locate, view and print the great works of the classical repertoire. Compared to traditional printed sheet music or music downloads, it is incredibly inexpensive. Original sources are out-of-copyright standard editions from publishers such as Breitkopf and Härtel, C.F. Peters, G. Schirmer, Carl Fischer, G. Ricordi, Durand and many others. The discs also include biographical and analytical information from Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians, 1911 Edition. Wagner wrote 13 operas and the vocal scores of each are all included in this 2-CD set. Extensive bookmarks and the helpful index of titles and arias makes finding specific sections or scenes quick and easy.
Wagner Operas The Complete Vocal Scores 2 CD 9x12 Richard Wagner 9781423428237 Books
This product has the vocal scores for all 13 of Wagner's operas. There are, in fact, 14 vocal scores on the two cd-roms included. SinceWagner significantly revised Tannhauser, vocal scores for both the Dresden and Paris versions are included. Very nice!
Most important, of course, are the scores themselves. The scans of the scores are clean and clear throughout: an excellent job! I own a
copy of this companies cd-roms for Bach's church cantatas, and in that product the occasional page is rather poorly scanned. Ties and
slurs, bar lines and even vertical lines on eighth notes (for example) are sketchy or just not there. That is not a problem on these Wagner
scores. If I had to pick a nit, any nit, then it would be that Wagner's many long 16th and 32nd runs are so dark that the bars blend together
so that at a casual glance it is hard to decide whether these are 16th or 32nd notes. Of course, given the time signature and the number of
notes, there really is no problem. And, as we get to the Ring and Parsifal, this 'problem' goes away.
Three of the vocal scores contain no translation of the words in German: Die Feen, Rienzi and Parsifal. All other scores include a line by
line translation into English along with the German text. Das Liebesverbot also includes a French translation!
Navigation is a nuisance, unfortunately. Scores are typically divided into several scenes at a go. When the reader reaches the end of the
current batch of scenes in the score, there is no easy way to go to the next set of scenes. We have to click on a link that says 'Table of
Contents,' then select the opera in which we have an interest, then find the next batch of scenes. Why not just include a link to the next
scene(s) at the end of the current scene contents? I could find no way around this difficulty. When following a recording with the score, then,
it becomes necessary to pause the recording while manipulating the navigation system. In a very few instances (the prize song at the end
of Die Meistersinger and a couple of places in the Ring), the break needed for navigation does not line up with a scene break. Annoying!
The supplemental materials are sometimes nice and sometimes not. I did not examine every one of them. The entry on 'harmony' goes on
for fifteen pages and looks to be quite well done. The entry for the 'Ring' is rather short and not too informative. The entry for 'The Flying
Dutchman' says 'See Die Fliegende Hollander' and gives nothing else (I was looking at this to see if it might give information about the included score: is it the original or revised score? The documentation with this product does not say).
Despite some navigtation problems, I can strongly recommend this. It really is quite excellent and inexpensive. Bravo CDSheetMusic!!
